BlackBerry PlayBook becomes the #1 selling tablet at Future Shop and Best Buy

March 4, 2012 in Hardware

There’s no doubt people have noticed RIM a little more with OS 2.0 on their PlayBook and a few of the big events they have held like the job fair earlier this month and Mobile World Congress. They have also started hitting it hard with new TV ads and even started implementing the PlayBook in the classroom. I think this could really help push the PlayBook on the app front. As it stands, apple has great library of education apps and assistive technology apps for those with learning disabilities. Though the PlayBook appworld has an education category, there isn’t much to offer yet.

TAT which is now part of RIM has been coming out with some very impressive apps lately, but sadly the only app that’s made it to appworld is their scrapbook app. Though its great to show off the power and flexibility of the PlayBook, I think everyone can agree it would be awesome to see ANY of these types of apps hit the market. In my opinion the biggest relief is seeing more free apps. Apple charges $100/year to have a developers account and yet they end up with thousands of free apps. I hope to see the same for the PlayBook

iPad 3 Rumored for March

February 11, 2012 in Hardware

It seems to be that time of the year again where everyone is expecting a new iPad to be just around the corner. Rumors are floating around with the estimated released sometime in early March.

Sources say the company has chosen the first week in March to debut the successor to the iPad 2 and will do so at one of its trademark special events. The event will be held in San Francisco, presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple’s preferred location for big announcements like these. No word yet on a street date for the iPad 3 (assuming that’s what it’s called), though my guess is retail availability will follow roughly the same schedule as that of the iPad 2: available for purchase a week or so after the event.

The hardware rumors get even more interesting with words like “retina display” and “A6 chip” which would mean quad core processing and a screen resolution of 2048 x 1536 at 9.7-inches; but who listens to the rumors anyway? Many believe it will also feature an HD front facing camera for HD face time.

Its hard to say weather the new iPad will have Siri, but looking at the possible hardware I think it would be a huge oversight not to include Siri. I think it will all boil down to weather the rumored 4G LTE network capabilities will in fact be included in the device. These details have been the subject of conflicting rumors. Either way I think the world will know soon enough when Apple goes to San Francisco!

Hard Drive Prices

February 10, 2012 in Hardware

After 4 months of waiting we are still only starting to see hard drive prices come back down to normal. Prior to the flood in Thailand, a 1TB internal hard drive could be bought for around 80 bucks and now we still see prices nearly doubled as 1TB and 2TB drives sit between $150.00 – $200.00 on average; nearly doubled the price in many cases.

When prices first went up I started to think that SSDs might be the way to go. It didn’t feel worth it to pay so much for a hard drive when you could get faster ones for less. The issue is the size, and now that prices have come down a little I’m on the fence on the issue. I think until SSDs get larger, or HDDs get cheaper there will be no clear winner in this way.

I personally didn’t think it would last nearly this long…
