Microsoft Surface Tablet

June 19, 2012 in Hardware

Microsoft Surface Tabet

Tablets have been in high demand over the past year with nearly every company having their hands in tablet computing in one way or another. As to late, Microsoft has only really been talking about how their new OS Windows 8 will be touch screen friendly, and there have been many other hardware companies who support this movement. Many ultrabooks also are featuring full touch screens in the wake of this movement. Now, Microsoft has announced their first consumer tablet computer and it looks pretty sexy. The first question that came to my mind is, will they be powerful?

Well lets talk about specs. The Surface for Windows 8 Pro will weigh in at 903 grams and measure 13.5mm thick. Powered by a third generation Intel Core ivy bridge processor this will be a ultrabook class tablet and will also have a 10.6″ ClearType Full HD Display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. Windows Pro 8 will be fitted with a microSDXC slot, USB 3.0 connection, Mini DisplayPort Video and the 2×2 MIMO antennae. The Pro will come in two flavours; either 64gb or 128gb SSD storage. It will ship equipped with a touch cover that has an integrated keyboard, VaporMG case and integrated stand. It has been reported Microsoft will have a price point that is in the same range as most other mainstream tablets and Intel ultrabooks but no official statement will been made till we get closer to release date.

It has been confirmed there will be a Netflix app available at launch. Not much talk about how the mobile phone platform will integrate with their new platform but with the way Apple and BlackBerry have been providing a Cloud based, accessible anywhere type of experience, it would be foolish for Microsoft to not do something similar. Perhaps not at launch but even the simple flexibility to aync or send SMS messages from your tablet should eventually come in my opinion.

Google Drive

April 24, 2012 in Software

I don’t mean that lame firefox plugin, nah bro this is 2012! I’m talking about THEE Google Drive. Not much to explain on this one, It’s all those files that are too big for emails, too hard to sync or collaborate and even that personal stuff you want to have access to everywhere. Google Drive is your one stop shop for cloud storage! Currently available for Mac, PC and Android devices. Nice to know they are doing something useful with those old Buzz and Wave servers they got kickin around!

Well at least it seems like it. They seem to be in the testing stages still. That oh so memorable and exciting time where they test server loads and everyone waits around hoping and praying to gain access to Googles new fidget toy. Anyone wanna send me an invite? 😉

Don’t believe me? Check it out!

G+ Gets a Face Lift

April 11, 2012 in News, Software

There’s no doubt Google has been trying very hard to get themselves noticed in the social networking world, but I think a lot of people couldn’t help but think they missed the mark. Last week they unveiled Google Play and now they have given Google+ a great new look. Personally I think the home page could use some work since on my monitor it just doesn’t seem to make good use of the screen real estate. I think where this update shines is the profile. A truly good social networking platform needs a good profile page, and I think they did a really good job with this. A very familiar layout to any facebook user with flexibility to add a single cover photo or several photos.

From the video it looks like a Youtube layout change might also be rolling out soon. This may be the start to several design changes Google will be launching through the rest of the month! Keep an eye out for more to come.

Dropbox is Now Even Better

April 4, 2012 in Software

A Gift from Dropbox

I always like to recommend Dropbox to people who need file sharing solutions, sync solutions, cloud storage solutions and many other applications. Today I hopped on to see a nice gift from them!

Dropbox used to give you 2GB free, and an additional 250Mb for every new user you referred to their website. So if you got your friends to make accounts, you got more storage! Now, not only are they offering 500Mb for every referral, but they are making the changes retroactive for all users and crediting their accounts.

You can invite up to 32 people to Dropbox for an maximum additional 16Gb of free storage; total of 18Gb! They also offer paid solutions for upwards of 50Gb and team solutions of 100Gb.

Great service! Thanks for the storage guys.

Instagram now on Android

April 3, 2012 in Software

Now on Android! The once iPhone only app is now available on Android and fans are going nuts! Well, at least the majority who are heavy social media users. Instagram is a free app that includes 18 filters to make stylized photos. These photos can be shared then on various social networking platforms. The app itself is somewhat different from the iPhone version still. A feature that lets you change the tilt-shift and vignetting is not included but expected to be seen soon in an update. This version also may not work on all Android phones, or tablets. The most important thing is seeing it actually ported over and this project in progress! Way to go guys! Android fans rejoice! Pick up the free app today at the link below.

Google Play

March 26, 2012 in News

Bored? Google now introduces Google Play! “Now your favorite music, books, movies, apps, and games are all in one place that’s accessible from the Web and any Android device.”

Though we have waved goodbye to Google products buzzkilled, I have a feeling Play will be around for good. Many users may notice Google Music will redirect you to Google Play, and here’s why! Some of Play’s key features are:

  • Store up to 20,000 songs for free and buy millions of new tracks
  • Download more than 450,000 Android apps and games
  • Browse the world’s largest selection of eBooks
  • Rent thousands of your favorite movies, including new releases and HD titles

So now it seems they have Android Market, Google Music, Google Books, and Youtube’s new movie rental all in the same place! I guess it means this isn’t really new after all…

BlackBerry 10 Concept

BlackBerry Blade

BlackBerry 10 Concept - Blade

If this is a BB 10 phone you can sign me up right now! I think this is the kind of hardware RIM needs to put out for the sake of the users and for the sake of the company! Not only do these specs make me nerdgasm but the phone itself looks totally sexy in my opinion. This is of course a total concept but still I hope that with the feedback the community gives about this sort of device will push rim in that direction. The technology is out there! I think with QNX there is no reason the platform can’t look something like this. Its time!
